The lotus movie poster and post card design
Project Brief: Poster and Card Design for Bonnie Sithebe's Film "The Lotus"
Objective: Our objective was to create a visually compelling poster and card for Bonnie Sithebe's film "The Lotus" that encapsulates the film’s themes and story. The design needed to convey the emotional and societal challenges faced by the characters while maintaining an element of intrigue without revealing too much about the plot.
Design Philosophy: We believe that a film poster should be a visual extension of the story it represents. For "The Lotus," our design philosophy focused on simplicity and symbolism to convey the film’s emotional depth and societal commentary. The design needed to be both visually striking and thought-provoking, encouraging viewers to engage with the film’s themes.
Creative Process:
Discovery and Research: Our process began with an in-depth understanding of the film’s storyline, themes, and characters. We watched key scenes, reviewed the script, and discussed the film’s message with Bonnie Sithebe to ensure our designs accurately reflected the film’s essence.
Concept Development: Based on our research, we brainstormed and sketched multiple design concepts. The primary focus was on creating a poster that highlights the separation and obstacles faced by the two main characters. We explored various ways to symbolize their struggle and the societal barriers between them.
Design Execution: After selecting the most promising concept, we refined and executed the design. The poster features the two lead actresses separated by a vertical line, symbolizing the societal and cultural barriers between them. The film’s title, "The Lotus," is placed in a vertical format along the dividing line to emphasize the obstacles and create a striking visual impact.
Symbolism and Imagery: The use of vertical separation not only represents the physical and emotional distance between the characters but also visually communicates the central conflict of the film. The choice of imagery and color palette was carefully selected to evoke a sense of tension and longing, drawing viewers into the story.
Card Design: The card design complements the poster by maintaining the same visual themes and elements. It features a simplified version of the poster’s imagery, ensuring consistency and reinforcing the film’s message. The card serves as both a promotional tool and a keepsake for viewers.
Client Collaboration and Feedback: Throughout the design process, we worked closely with Bonnie Sithebe, incorporating her feedback to ensure the designs aligned with her vision. This collaborative approach was crucial in achieving a final product that effectively represents the film.
Finalization and Application: After finalizing the poster and card designs, we prepared various formats suitable for different promotional platforms, including digital media, print, and social media. We ensured that the designs maintained their impact and clarity across all formats.
Highlights:
Symbolic Representation: The poster’s design effectively captures the essence of the film’s themes by visually representing the separation and societal barriers faced by the characters.
Striking Visual Impact: The use of vertical separation and the strategic placement of the film’s title create a powerful and thought-provoking visual narrative.
